Song for the Mute is a Sydney-based label founded in 2010 by Melvin Tanaya and Lyna Ty. The name was chosen with intention: to give voice to what goes unspoken. Over fifteen years, that premise has shaped everything about how the brand works. Each collection arrives as a chapter in a long-form story, titled and numbered, never one the same. The references shift season to season, drawn from travel, memory, community, and the peripheral cultures that rarely make it to the centre. The garments follow: fabrics chosen for their behaviour over time, silhouettes that carry the weight of the narrative without announcing it. Tanaya came to fashion through graphic design. Ty studied at Accademia Italiana di Moda. Together they built something that sits outside the rhythms of the industry, grounded in the notion that family and authenticity are not values to be marketed, but structures to design from. The people around them, their stories and lived experiences, have always been the material.
