Description
Published in 2008 by MoMu, the Mode Museum of the Province of Antwerp, this is the catalogue produced for Véronique Branquinho's first retrospective exhibition, held to mark the tenth anniversary of her label. The exhibition ran from 12 March to 17 August 2008. The title is a French-Dutch wordplay: a play on the idea of a designer laid bare, and on a complete career overview. The book covers every collection Branquinho produced from her debut Spring Summer 1998 show in Paris through to 2008, including the launch of her menswear line in 2003. Edited by Kaat Debo, then director of MoMu, with contributions from New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn, Christoph Ruys, and artist Oscar van den Boomgaard. The book traces the references Branquinho built her world around: David Hamilton's romantic photography, Laura Palmer from David Lynch's Twin Peaks, the film Emmanuelle, Histoire d'O, Heavenly Creatures, Bilitis. The transition from girl to woman as a continuous theme. The mixing of menswear and womenswear in a single silhouette: tweed with silk, structured tailoring with casual cuts. Branquinho graduated from the fashion department of the Royal Academy in Antwerp in 1995, won the VH1 Best Newcomer Award in New York at twenty-four, and opened her flagship store in Antwerp in 2003. 176 pages, hardcover in white cloth boards with printed dust jacket. 30.5 by 21.5 by 2.3 cm. 1,120 grams. Text in English and Dutch. ISBN 9789079269020. Sourced for MIG by Paris Image Unlimited as part of a thirty-three-title curation of rare art, photography, and design books. A reference for anyone tracking the Antwerp school, the second wave of Belgian fashion after the Six, or the lineage of designer-as-image-maker that this period defined.
