Description
Published by Fondazione Prada in Milan in 2002 to document Walter De Maria's 1999 to 2000 exhibition of the same name, this is one of the only substantial monographs ever produced on the American artist during his lifetime. De Maria, who refused most institutional engagement and gave almost no interviews, treated Milan as the site of a rare full-scale presentation, and the book is the only sustained published record of what he showed there. The exhibition ran across the Fondazione's Milanese spaces in collaboration with the artist himself. The book's editorial structure is unusual. Rather than reproducing the installation views straight, it weaves De Maria's sculptures through a portfolio of black-and-white photographs of Milan made by Nanda Lanfranco in close collaboration with the artist. The result places the works at specific crossroads in the city: street corners, intersections, public squares. The essay is by Germano Celant, the Italian curator who had coined the term Arte Povera in 1967 and was at the time senior curator at Fondazione Prada. The foreword is by De Maria himself, the preface by Miuccia Prada. 298 pages, hardcover with dust jacket and a separate booklet. Square format, 29.8 by 29.8 cm. 50 colour, 2 black-and-white, and 48 duotone illustrations. Language: English. ISBN 9788887029130. Sourced for MIG by Paris Image Unlimited as part of a thirty-three-title curation of rare art, photography, and design books. A reference for anyone tracking postwar American sculpture, land art, the Fondazione Prada exhibition programme, or the Celant curatorial line.
